Established in 1865 at the corner of East University and Highland Avenues, Mecklenburg Gardens is a fine example of the uniqueness and diversity that defines Uptown. The restaurant and banquet facility has proven remarkably resilient, having seen its share of ups and downs, over the past 150 years.
Cincinnati’s history is rich in German heritage, and Mecklenburg Gardens – founded as John Neeb’s Mount Auburn Garden Restaurant and Billiard Saloon – was long served a draw for the city’s German residents. Today, Mecklenburg offers a mix of traditional German dishes and casual American cuisine in a 19th century structure listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Mecklenburg Gardens is open for lunch and dinner Monday thru Friday and for dinner on Saturday. It is also available for private parties year-round in the Banquet Haus and from April through October in the outdoor garden. Much of the building’s original architecture remains intact, from heavy timber beams and stained glass windows to fireplaces, wood paneled rooms and an immense mahogany bar.
Tom Harten, who owns Mecklenburg Gardens with his brother, Chris, says he was drawn to the restaurant because Uptown offered the kind of urban environment in which he and his brothers and sisters were raised. For years, Tom and Chris had purchased and renovated homes in Avondale and North Avondale. According to Tom, the Mecklenburg Gardens building represented an opportunity to buy and restore an historical landmark in the heart of the city.
“We believe in the inner city, in the Uptown area,” Tom says. “What is nice about Uptown is that we are able to have a location in the heart of the city, convenient to downtown, I-75 and I-71. You can get anywhere from here.”
With the development projects currently underway in Uptown, Tom expects that his business will continue to grow. “A business like ours depends on the people who live in the area. With developments like Stetson Square, the area is on its way.”
