Workshop to Help Preserve Ownership In Avondale

On December 7, Uptown Consortium, Inc. (UCI) partnered with the Avondale Development Corporation to host an all-day workshop for homeowners in Avondale. With support from BB&T, Greater Cincinnati Foundation and other partners, the workshop aimed to preserve and support homeownership in the community. Representatives from People Working Cooperatively (PWC), Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati and the City of Cincinnati all led discussions on different topics surrounding homeownership.

“As Avondale continues to grow, it’s critically important that current residents are able to stay in their homes and thrive within the community,” said Brooke Duncan, UCI’s Director of Community Development. “We’re dedicated to creating opportunities like this for Uptown residents to access helpful resources, and we’re grateful to all of our partners for making this workshop possible.”

Presenters included Stephanie Moes, Managing Attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati, Nina Creech, Vice President of Operations at PWC, and Roy Hackworth, Housing & Community Development Division Manager for the City of Cincinnati. Each partner spoke about a financial aspect of owning a home, including avoiding foreclosure, dealing with delinquent taxes, down payment assistance and emergency mortgage assistance.

“Homeownership is an important pathway for families to stay out of poverty. It is fundamental to economic opportunities for minority families,” said Stephanie Moes, Managing Attorney, Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati. “We appreciated the opportunity to participate in this important workshop aimed at preserving homes and wealth for Avondale residents.”

Approximately 20 participants attended the workshop. Each were able to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions with presenters and with one another.

“Our mission is to keep people safe and healthy and home,” said Nina Creech, Vice President of Operations, PWC. “I was excited to share our mission with the attentive group of residents and talk about our upcoming “Stepping On” classes that are open to all residents of Avondale ages 60 and up beginning February 18.”
