New UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute Outpatient Facility Opens

On Thursday, April 11, UC Health and the University of Cincinnati celebrated the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute outpatient facility grand opening. The institute is the region’s leading treatment center for complex neurological and psychological conditions, such as strokes, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.

The 114,000-square-foot, $68 million state-of-the-art facility now houses more than 125 neurological specialists, subspecialists and super specialists. Locating the institute’s physicians and researchers under one roof will increase collaboration and innovation across disciplines to improve patient care.

“This stunning space is evidence of what can happen when you match great vision with collaboration, dedication and community support,” said Neville G. Pinto, PhD, President, University of Cincinnati, in a news release. “As the only Carnegie Research 1 university in the region, UC, working with our partners, has a responsibility to lead the next generation of breakthroughs, including those related to healthcare and access to healthcare.”

The facility was designed with neurological patients in mind, with the help of a patient advisory group. The building’s mesh façade helps diffuse direct daylight for neurological patients experiencing light sensitivity. Other features are designed to accommodate patients, such as doors that slide instead of swinging open and comfortable lobbies and lounge spaces.

The UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute is a collaboration between UC Health and the UC College of Medicine to provide cutting-edge patient care. The new facility will provide even better tools for the institute’s physicians and researchers.

“This building will continue to accelerate our work in the neurosciences, and today is one grand example of the partnership of UC Health, the University of Cincinnati and the entire Cincinnati community that will provide hope for patients with neurologic diseases here and across the world,” said Joseph Broderick, MD, Director of the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute.

The UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute is part of the Uptown Innovation District—the region’s hub for research, innovation and talent.

“We believe these state-of-the-art facilities will help attract talent to the University of Cincinnati, UC Health, the Uptown Innovation Corridor and the region,” said Beth Robinson, President and CEO, Uptown Consortium, Inc.

UCI provided $20 million in New Markets Tax Credits for construction of the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute. In addition, UCI engaged WEB Ventures, UCI’s economic inclusion consultants, to ensure that the project met specific minority business enterprise, women business enterprise inclusion goals throughout the construction process.
